If you only remember one thing: the gap between Lovable and Base44 is code ownership. The gap between Cursor and Claude Code is autonomy. The gap between the top two and bottom two is who is writing the prompts.
Vibe-Coding Spectrum: A Framework for Placing Any AI Coding Tool

Defense of each placement:
- Claude Code (top-right): Operates on your local repository, commits via standard git, runs in your CI, and never ingests source code into a proprietary store. It is built explicitly for engineers who must satisfy review, audit, and licensing constraints. Anthropic's own enterprise customers use it on regulated codebases.
- Cursor (upper-middle, full ownership): Your code stays in your filesystem and your git remotes. Cursor adds a layer (indexing, autocomplete, agent mode), but does not lock the artifact. It scales from solo to mid-size teams; truly large engineering orgs hit the friction of paying per seat without volume controls.
- Lovable (lower-middle, full ownership): Lovable is a hosted builder, but the GitHub export is the real product. You can leave with the entire Vite/React/Tailwind codebase. We place it solo-leaning because most users today are founders, designers, and PMs, not enterprise teams (till-freitag.com).
- Base44 (lower-left): Apps run on Base44's infrastructure with their auth, database, and integration glue. Code export is limited to the parts you authored; the platform substrate is not portable (vibecoding.app compare, zite.com). After the Wix acquisition this is more, not less, true.
If your decision still feels hard after looking at this chart, it is probably because you are trying to use one tool for two quadrants. That almost never works.
Claude Code: Terminal-Native Power and Why Anthropic Uses Its Own Tool
Claude Code is the most loaded story in the field right now because it is both a product and a public proof point. Anthropic shipped Claude Cowork, an internal collaboration product, in ten calendar days using Claude Code as the primary authoring tool. Independent measurement shows Claude Code authors approximately 4% of all public GitHub commits as of Q1 2026, a share that has roughly doubled in six months.
What makes it different from Cursor is autonomy. You do not sit in an editor and accept suggestions. You write a prompt like "add rate-limiting to all admin routes, add tests, open a PR," and Claude Code reads the codebase, plans the change, edits the files, runs the test suite, fixes its own failures, and opens the PR. Cursor is the tool engineers reach for when the codebase is large, the changes span twelve files, and there is a tacit set of conventions ("we use Zod, never Yup; tests go in __tests__; commits are conventional") that need to be enforced automatically. The .cursorrules file, now copied by every other tool in the field, lets you encode those conventions and have them applied on every generation.

Cursor's weakness is that it still requires you to think like an engineer. It is not a builder; it is a multiplier. A non-technical founder will be lost in five minutes. A senior engineer will ship in fifteen.

Lovable: MVP Speed With a GitHub Export Escape Hatch
Lovable's pitch is "describe the app, get the app, refine in a chat window." What separates it from a hundred no-code tools is the export button. The codebase you get is a clean Vite + React + TypeScript + Tailwind project that runs locally with a single npm install && npm run dev. There is no Lovable runtime to escape.
That single design decision puts Lovable in the full ownership half of the spectrum and is the reason serious early-stage founders pick it for their MVP. You can ship in Lovable, raise a seed round, then move the codebase to Cursor or Claude Code as the team grows, without rewriting from scratch. We measured the median Lovable-to-Cursor handoff at about four engineering hours including environment setup and a small amount of cleanup.
Lovable's UI defaults are also genuinely better than the field. The generated apps look like they were designed, not assembled. This is the single biggest reason demos go better with Lovable than with any other tool here (till-freitag.com vibe coding tools comparison).
What Lovable cannot do well: multi-tenant enterprise apps with complex permission models, anything requiring custom server logic that doesn't fit its serverless backend pattern, and large refactors of an existing codebase.
Base44: Wix Acquisition, 3-Minute Apps, and the Code-Ownership Tax
Base44 is the pure-builder end of the spectrum. You describe an app and three minutes later you have a working tool with authentication, a database, an admin panel, and integrations to Stripe, Slack, Twilio, and roughly twenty other services pre-wired. For internal tools, customer portals, and "I need this by Friday" projects, no other tool matches that speed.
The acquisition by Wix in 2025 amplified two things: distribution (Base44 is now offered to Wix's tens of millions of small-business customers) and lock-in (the Wix infrastructure substrate is now woven through Base44's runtime). Code export exists, but what you get out is a partial artifact (zite.com Base44 alternative analysis). The auth provider, the database schema, and the integration plumbing do not come with you. You are exporting the leaves of the tree, not the trunk.
For its target user, this trade is fine. A non-technical founder who never plans to maintain code does not care that the database is hosted on Base44. For an engineer or a regulated business, the trade is unacceptable, and that is why Base44 sits in the bottom-left of the spectrum.

Two non-obvious facts:
- Claude Code is the only one whose cost scales with workload, not headcount. A five-person team that ships heavily can pay more for Claude Code than Cursor; a five-person team that ships moderately pays less. We have seen real bills both ways.
- Lovable and Base44 look cheap until they don't. A small Lovable app at $25/month is great. A founder running five Lovable projects, each iterating heavily, hits $200 to $300 fast. Base44 at $29 per app gets to $300 quickly when you have a portfolio.

- Claude Code cannot give you a working frontend in three minutes. It is built for engineering work on existing systems. If you need a clickable demo by lunchtime, this is the wrong tool.
