Layer 05

Governed Workflows

Embed AI in how the organisation operates.

Agents become valuable when they sit inside the processes your organisation already runs. Governed workflows put AI into those processes with approvals, escalations and human checkpoints defined up front, so automation and oversight are designed together.

What the workflows layer includes

  • Business processes
  • Automations
  • Decision workflows
  • Multi-agent workflows
  • Approvals
  • Escalations
  • Human-in-the-loop
  • Autonomous operations

Where people stay in the loop

Oversight is a step in the workflow, not a report after it.

  • Approvals

A named approver must say yes before a defined step proceeds, such as a purchase above a threshold.

  • Escalations

Unusual, risky or low-confidence cases route to a person or team with the authority to decide.

  • Review

Samples and exceptions are queued for human review, so quality is checked while the workflow runs.

  • Override

People can pause, redirect or stop a workflow, and that action is recorded.

From automation to autonomous operations

  1. 01

    Automate

Start with single, well-defined steps where AI drafts or classifies and a person decides.

  2. 02

    Decide

Add decision workflows in which AI weighs options against policy and proposes an outcome.

  3. 03

    Coordinate

Combine agents in multi-agent workflows, each with its own identity and limits.

  4. 04

    Operate

Where policy and risk allow, let workflows run with supervision rather than approval at every step.

Governed by default

Every step in a governed workflow inherits the identity, policy and audit of the layer beneath it. That is what lets you trace a business outcome back through the workflow to the agent, the model and the data it used.

Where this sits in the closed intelligence loop

Control, then intelligence, then agency, then execution, then outcomes. Outcomes and their evidence flow back into data and context, so the loop closes.

  2. 02 · Layers 02 and 03IntelligenceTurn data and knowledge into useful intelligence.
  3. 03 · Layer 04AgencyLet AI act within defined authority.

  5. 05 · Layer 06OutcomesMeasure business results, and feed evidence back into data and context.

This layer is the Execution stage: governed AI embedded in real processes, with outcomes that feed back into data and context.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI workflow automation?

It is the use of AI inside business processes: classifying, drafting, deciding and acting on steps that people used to do by hand, with defined approvals and escalations.

Where does human-in-the-loop fit?

At the points your policy defines: approvals, escalations, reviews and overrides. They are part of the workflow definition, so they run every time.

Can workflows run without human approval?

Where policy and risk level allow. Controlled autonomy lets you move a workflow from approval at every step to supervision, and back, without rebuilding it.

What is a multi-agent workflow?

A workflow in which several agents hand work to each other. Each agent keeps its own identity, permissions and limits, so one agent’s authority does not leak into another’s.

Which Swfte products cover workflows?

Studio builds workflows without code. SecOps agents apply the same approach to security operations, and are in beta.

Across every layer

These ideas apply to every layer of the platform.

  • Controlled autonomy

Five levels, from AI that recommends to AI that adapts within limits.

  • Trust Profile

The record that describes what each AI system is and may do.

  • AI sovereignty

Seven kinds of control over your AI estate.

  • AI governance

Governance that runs inside AI, not beside it.

  • Swfte Intelligence Platform

Analyse and visualise your data, usage, agents and outcomes, then build from what you see.

  • Company brain

One governed place for everything your organisation knows, for every product to read from.

  • Custom models

Models adapted on your own data, evaluated before release and deployed under your control.

An honest first-party account of how we build, review and approve work, labelled by status.

  • Governed agents

Identity, permissions, policy, approvals and audit for agents, with ten templates.

  • Compliance-approved workflows
