Retool Alternatives (October 2026)
TL;DR: Retool is a platform for building internal tools, with workflows and AI agents on the same platform. It prices per builder and user, plus workflow runs, AI credits and agent hours, and it can be self-hosted. Swfte Studio is a managed builder for agents and workflows with a model gateway behind it. Keep Retool for internal apps; consider Swfte when agents are the point.
About Retool and why teams compare it
Retool describes itself as a platform to build, deploy and manage internal tools, with a unified engine that connects to any database, API or LLM. Its own pages describe apps (web and mobile), workflows and Retool Agents, which it defines as a way to encode a business process, make deterministic decisions with code, make non-deterministic decisions with LLMs, and include humans in the decision. It documents self-hosted deployment, and its trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022. Teams compare it with Swfte when they want agents and AI workflows more than internal user interfaces, or when they want testing and versioned releases around model steps. This page compares the two on published facts and says who should pick which.
Retool sits in the Internal tools platform with AI agents and workflows category. In short: A platform to build, deploy and manage internal tools, with apps, workflows and AI agents that connect to databases, APIs and LLMs. Pricing as published is Per user per month, plus usage. As displayed in euros when we read the pricing page: Free (up to 5 users, 500 workflow runs and 250 AI credits per month, up to 20 hours of agents). Team: builders €9 per month billed annually or €11 monthly, internal users €5 or €6. Business: builders €46 or €60, internal users €14 or €17, with external users priced by volume band. Enterprise is flexible pricing. Self-hosted uses the same prices for Free, Team and Business. It is best for Engineering and operations teams that want to build internal apps and dashboards on top of their own databases and APIs, with agents and workflows alongside.
Swfte vs Retool at a glance
| Capability | Swfte | Retool | Checked at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category | Visual builder for agents and workflows (Studio), on the same platform as the gateway | Platform to "build, deploy, and manage internal tools" with apps, workflows and agents, per Retool | retool.com |
| Pricing unit and plans | Free (10 workflows, 5 agents, 2,000 executions per month); Pro $39; Team $99 (3 users included); Enterprise custom | Free; Team (builders €9 annual or €11 monthly, internal users €5 or €6); Business (builders €46 or €60, internal users €14 or €17, external users by volume band); Enterprise flexible. Amounts are per month and shown in euros when we read the page; self-hosted uses the same Free, Team and Business prices | Retool pricing |
| How usage is counted | Executions per month by plan; see the pricing page for model usage terms | Workflow runs and AI credits per month by plan. Agents are billed by the hour, not in AI credits: each month an organisation gets $50 of free agents usage, up to 20 hours depending on the model, and billable time excludes waits for subagents, resource authentication and human approval | Agents billing and usage |
| Free plan | Free: 10 workflows, 5 agents and 2,000 executions per month | Unlimited web and mobile apps, 500 workflow runs per month, 5GB of data storage, up to 5 users, up to 20 hours per month of agents and 250 AI credits per month | Retool pricing |
| Internal apps and UI | Not listed among Studio’s features on this site; Studio is described as a builder for agents and workflows | Web and mobile apps are core to the platform and unlimited on the Free plan, per the pricing page | Retool pricing |
| Integrations | 100+ tool integrations, plus an API for custom systems | Connects to databases and APIs (REST, GraphQL, OpenAPI, gRPC, SOAP), AI providers, CRM, messaging and storage tools; the integrations page features over 100 but gives no exact count | Retool integrations |
| AI agents and models | Any model reachable through the Connect gateway; agents and multi-agent orchestration in Studio | Agents use an LLM, core tools (such as email, storage, web search and code execution), custom tools and MCP servers. Retool-managed keys cover providers including Anthropic and OpenAI, and Enterprise organisations can bring their own key for any AI provider | Retool AI providers and models |
| MCP | See the MCP gateway page for how Swfte approaches MCP | Agents can link MCP servers as tools. Retool also offers an MCP server, described as in public beta, that lets tools such as Claude, Cursor and Codex build and edit apps and manage a workspace | Retool MCP server |
| Human approval and governance | Role-based access and human-approval steps in workflows; configurable data-retention policies are designed for, not shipped | The agent docs list consent mechanisms for tool execution as part of human-in-the-loop, and the agents page mentions an audit trail of every action. Audit logging and rich permission controls are listed on Business and above | Agents concepts |
| Evaluation and versioning | Testing and evaluation: A/B experiments between chatflow versions and safety policies on agents are built; golden sets and regression runs are in development. Versions with promote and rollback for chatflows and workflows; release channels and gradual rollouts are in development | Evals with datasets, test cases and programmatic or LLM-as-a-judge reviewers, with side-by-side comparison of two runs. Source control for agents is marked beta in the changelog, and evals and datasets are not available on protected agents | Evals in Retool Agents |
| Hosting and deployment | Managed service; customer data at rest in AWS Ireland. Dedicated or private deployment is designed for and scoped as an engagement, not self-serve | Cloud on AWS multitenant infrastructure, or self-hosted in a single-tenant instance, either managed by Retool on AWS or managed by you on Kubernetes with Helm. Enterprise is required for unlimited users, SSO and advanced self-host features | Self-hosted Retool |
| SSO and admin controls | SAML SSO and SCIM are in development | SAML and OpenID Connect SSO, source control and custom branding on Enterprise; audit logging and rich permission controls on Business and above | Retool pricing |
| Data use | See the trust centre; a no-training statement is pending confirmation and is not made here | Not verified from the pages we reviewed | |
| Compliance | No SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 certificate is held and no HIPAA BAA is signed today; a SOC 2 Type I audit is in preparation (see the trust page). The exact posture depends on your use case, jurisdiction and deployment | Trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, GDPR and CCPA, with the SOC 2 report, a pentest report and a data flow diagram available there. HIPAA and BAA availability were not stated on the pages we reviewed | Retool trust centre |
| Export and portability | Not verified for Studio on this page | Classic apps export as a single JSON file or a Toolscript archive and import by replacing an app with JSON or a ZIP. The export holds queries, components and modules but not resources | Import and export apps |

Who should pick which
Pick Retool if
- You are building internal apps, dashboards and admin tools on top of your own databases and APIs, and want the UI builder as well as agents and workflows.
- You need to run the platform in your own network: Retool documents self-hosted deployment on Kubernetes with Helm, or a single-tenant instance managed by Retool on AWS.
- You want a free plan that includes unlimited apps, up to 5 users and up to 20 hours per month of agents, and a per-user price list you can read.
- You want Retool’s agent evals with LLM-as-a-judge reviewers and its source control for agents (marked beta in its changelog).
Pick Swfte if
- The work is agents and model decisions rather than internal user interfaces, and you want the builder and the model gateway on one platform.
- You want testing, versioned releases and rollbacks in the build flow rather than as a separate process.
- You want human-approval steps in workflows and role and tenant controls, with Nexus available next to Studio for agent governance.
- You are comfortable with Swfte’s current gaps: SAML SSO and SCIM are in development, dedicated or private deployment is scoped as an engagement and is not self-serve, there is no self-hosted edition listed, and the integration catalogue is smaller.
What Retool does well
- Builds internal apps, workflows and agents on one platform, and connects to databases and APIs including REST, GraphQL and gRPC, per Retool
- A free plan with unlimited web and mobile apps, up to 5 users, 500 workflow runs per month and up to 20 hours per month of agents
- Self-hosted deployment is documented, either managed by Retool on AWS or self-managed on Kubernetes with Helm
- Agents have an evals framework with datasets, test cases and reviewers, and can connect to MCP servers as tools
- Trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022, with GDPR and CCPA
Trade-offs to weigh
- Pricing counts builders, internal users and external users separately, with separate usage units for workflow runs, AI credits and agent hours, so a bill takes some modelling
- SAML and OpenID Connect SSO and source control are listed on Enterprise only, and audit logging on Business and above
- Retool’s changelog marks Agents as beta in 2025 and the MCP server as public beta, so check the current status before you depend on them
- Retool’s centre of gravity is internal user interfaces, so teams that want agents with no front end may use a smaller part of the platform
When Swfte is the better choice
When the work is agents and model decisions rather than internal user interfaces, and you want evaluation, versioned releases and the model gateway on the same platform as the builder. Retool is the stronger choice for internal apps and for self-hosting.
Swfte Studio builds agents and workflows visually, and uses the Connect gateway for model access, so routing, failover and cost tracking are shared. Studio lists testing and evaluation, semantic versions with rollbacks, and human-approval steps in workflows. Nexus adds agent governance.
Swfte is not a drop-in replacement for Retool. Retool builds internal user interfaces and can be self-hosted; Studio does not list an app builder or a self-hosted edition. Swfte is also earlier on enterprise identity: SAML SSO and SCIM are in development, dedicated or private deployment is an engagement, not self-serve, and the integration catalogue is smaller.
Where Swfte fits
Agents that decide, not just display data
Workflows where a model chooses the next step, calls tools and may need approval fit Studio’s agent builder, with the gateway and governance on the same platform.
Tested and versioned AI steps
Studio lists A/B experiments between chatflow versions and version rollback, with golden sets, regression runs and release channels in development around the model steps.
One platform for workflows and model access
Studio uses the Connect gateway, so routing, failover and cost tracking are shared with the workflows that use them.
Keep Retool for the internal apps
Few teams need a full switch. Keep Retool for the dashboards and admin tools your staff click through, and use Swfte where an agent makes the decision.
How to migrate from Retool to Swfte
1. Split your Retool estate into apps and automations
List apps, workflows and agents separately. Apps are user interfaces, which Studio does not list as a feature. Workflows and agents are the candidates to move.
2. Record usage and seats
Note builders, internal and external users, workflow runs, AI credits and agent hours from your own Retool billing. The units differ from Swfte’s plans, so compare on your own workload.
3. Export for reference
Retool documents exporting classic apps as JSON or a Toolscript archive. We do not list an import for those formats, and exports exclude resources, so treat them as a record of queries and logic to rebuild. Write down each agent’s instructions, tools and datasets by hand.
4. Rebuild one agent in Studio
Recreate the trigger, the instructions, the tools and any approval step. Studio’s free plan includes 10 workflows, 5 agents and 2,000 executions per month, enough to test one case.
5. Test on real inputs, then run both
Reuse your Retool eval cases as Studio test inputs and run 20 to 50 real inputs. Then send live triggers to both for a while and compare outputs, failures and cost.
6. Cut over what fits
Move the agent-centric workflows once results hold, and keep Retool for internal apps. Change your Retool plan only after usage has dropped.
How Retool compares to other alternatives
Other builders worth comparing are Zapier (cloud automation with the widest app catalogue), Make (visual scenarios), n8n (self-hostable workflows) and Agentforce (Salesforce’s agent platform). Each has its own page in the alternatives index.

Frequently asked questions about Retool alternatives
Is Swfte a Retool alternative?
For AI agents and AI-centric workflows, yes. For building internal apps and dashboards, Retool is built for that and Studio does not list an app UI builder. Many teams use both.
How much does Retool cost, and is there a free plan?
Retool lists a Free plan with unlimited web and mobile apps, up to 5 users, 500 workflow runs and 250 AI credits per month and up to 20 hours per month of agents. When we read the pricing page it showed euros: Team builders at €9 per month billed annually or €11 monthly, internal users €5 or €6; Business builders at €46 or €60, internal users €14 or €17, external users by volume band. Enterprise pricing is flexible.
How does Retool bill AI agents?
Retool says agents are billed by the hour rather than in AI credits, with hourly prices varying by model. Each month an organisation gets $50 of free agents usage, described as up to 20 hours depending on the model. Billable time excludes waiting for subagents, resource authentication and human approval.
Can I self-host Retool?
Yes. Retool documents a single-tenant self-hosted instance, either managed by Retool on AWS or managed by you, with production deployments on Kubernetes using Helm. Its pricing page says Enterprise is required for unlimited users, SSO and advanced self-host features. Swfte Studio is a managed service; dedicated or private deployment is scoped as an engagement, not self-serve.
Can I import my Retool apps into Swfte?
No. We do not list an import for Retool exports. Retool lets you export a classic app as JSON or a Toolscript archive, without resources, which is useful as a record of what to rebuild.
Does Retool support AI agents and MCP?
Retool Agents combine code, LLM decisions and human approval, and can link MCP servers as tools. Retool also offers an MCP server in public beta so that tools such as Claude, Cursor and Codex can work with a Retool workspace. Its changelog marks agent features as beta in 2025, so check the current status. Studio lists agents and multi-agent orchestration; for MCP see our MCP gateway guide.
Which is better for compliance?
Retool’s trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, GDPR and CCPA. It does not state HIPAA on the pages we reviewed. Swfte does not hold a SOC 2 report or an ISO 27001 certificate and does not sign HIPAA BAAs today; a SOC 2 Type I audit is in preparation, and the trust page has the current status. Ask each vendor for its documents and confirm scope for your use case.
Which LLMs can Retool agents use?
Retool’s docs say Anthropic and OpenAI models are available through Retool-managed keys, and Enterprise organisations can bring their own key for any AI provider. We did not find a full model list on the pages we reviewed.
