Microsoft Copilot Studio Alternatives (October 2026)
TL;DR: Microsoft Copilot Studio is Microsoft’s low-code studio for AI agents, workflows and agent flows, billed in Copilot Credits. It is not GitHub Copilot. Swfte Studio is a managed builder for agents and workflows on the same platform as a model gateway. Keep Copilot Studio for agents inside Microsoft 365; consider Swfte when you want a model-agnostic stack with evaluation and versioning around it.
About Microsoft Copilot Studio and why teams compare it
Microsoft describes Copilot Studio as a graphical, low-code studio for building and managing AI-powered agents and workflows, which you connect to your organisation’s data and systems and publish to channels such as Teams, Microsoft Copilot and websites. It is a separate product from GitHub Copilot, although one of its three harnesses, the engines that run the work, is named after GitHub Copilot. Microsoft also lists agent flows, MCP support, evaluations and a security and governance model built on Power Platform. Usage is counted in Copilot Credits. Teams compare it with Swfte when they want agents outside the Microsoft estate, a choice of models through one gateway, or testing and versioned releases around the AI steps. This page compares the two on published facts and says who should pick which.
Microsoft Copilot Studio sits in the Low-code agent and workflow studio in the Microsoft ecosystem category. In short: Microsoft’s graphical, low-code studio for building and managing AI agents, workflows and agent flows, billed in Copilot Credits and published to Teams, Microsoft Copilot, websites and other channels. Pricing as published is Copilot Credits. Tenant-wide packs of 25,000 Copilot Credits at $200.00 per pack per month, or pay-as-you-go at $0.01 per Copilot Credit billed to an Azure subscription, or a one-year pre-purchase plan that Microsoft says saves up to 20%. A free trial licence lets you build and test but not publish. It is best for Organisations on Microsoft 365 that want agents inside Teams and Microsoft Copilot, governed through Power Platform and Entra.

Who should pick which
Pick Microsoft Copilot Studio if
- Your agents live in Microsoft 365. Copilot Studio publishes to Teams and Microsoft Copilot, and employee-facing use by Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users is included within fair usage limits.
- You want Microsoft’s governance model: Power Platform data policies, Entra, Purview audit logs, customer-managed keys, Customer Lockbox and Agent 365.
- You want the larger connector catalogue: Microsoft states 1,500+ pre-built data connectors, against 100+ tool integrations plus an API in Studio.
- You want to pay per use through an Azure subscription, with pay-as-you-go listed at $0.01 per Copilot Credit, or buy tenant packs at $200.00 per 25,000 credits per month.
Pick Swfte if
- You want any model reachable through one gateway rather than a Microsoft-hosted model set, with routing, failover and cost tracking shared with the workflows.
- You want testing, versioned releases and rollbacks in the build flow, with A/B experiments (golden sets and regression runs are in development).
- You want human-approval steps in workflows and role and tenant controls, with Nexus available next to Studio for agent governance.
- Your estate is mixed or not Microsoft-first, and you would rather not build on Power Platform environments and Azure billing.
- You are comfortable with Swfte’s current gaps: SAML SSO and SCIM are in development, dedicated or private deployment is scoped as an engagement and is not self-serve, and the integration catalogue is smaller.
What Microsoft Copilot Studio does well
- Agents and workflows in one studio, published to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Copilot, websites, mobile apps and other channels
- 1,500+ pre-built data connectors and MCP tools and resources, per Microsoft
- Governance through Power Platform data policies, Microsoft Purview audit logs, customer-managed keys and Customer Lockbox, with Microsoft Agent 365 as a control plane
- Employee-facing agent use is included for Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users, within fair usage limits
- Credits can be bought as tenant packs, as a pre-purchase plan, or pay-as-you-go at a listed $0.01 per credit
Trade-offs to weigh
- Billing is metered in Copilot Credits, and one interaction can use several feature types at once, so cost depends on how the agent is designed
- Prepaid capacity is enforced: Microsoft disables custom agents at 125% of prepaid capacity, and new agent flow runs are blocked when it is used up, unless pay-as-you-go is on
- The rates on this page are for the standard harness; the other harnesses, including the GitHub Copilot harness, are billed under separate documentation we did not review
- The product is built on Power Platform environments, Microsoft Entra and Azure billing, which suits Microsoft estates more than mixed ones
When Swfte is the better choice
When you want any model reachable through one gateway, evaluation and versioned releases in the build flow, and a platform that is not tied to Microsoft 365. Copilot Studio is deeper inside the Microsoft estate and has the larger connector catalogue.
Swfte Studio builds agents and workflows visually, and uses the Connect gateway for model access, so routing, failover and cost tracking are shared. Studio lists testing and evaluation, semantic versions with rollbacks, and human-approval steps in workflows. Nexus adds agent governance.
Swfte is not a drop-in replacement for Copilot Studio. Copilot Studio has a much larger connector catalogue and deep Microsoft 365 and Entra integration. Swfte is earlier on enterprise identity: SAML SSO and SCIM are in development, and dedicated or private deployment is an engagement, not self-serve.
Where Swfte fits
Agents that work across your whole stack
Workflows where a model chooses the next step, calls tools and may need approval fit Studio’s agent builder, with the gateway and governance on the same platform and no dependency on one vendor’s estate.
Tested and versioned AI steps
Studio lists A/B experiments between chatflow versions and version rollback, with golden sets, regression runs and release channels in development around the model steps.
One platform for workflows and model access
Studio uses the Connect gateway, so routing, failover and cost tracking are shared with the workflows that use them.
Keep Copilot Studio for agents inside Microsoft 365
Few teams need a full switch. Keep Copilot Studio for the agents that live in Teams and Microsoft Copilot, and use Swfte for workflows that span other systems and models.
How to migrate from Microsoft Copilot Studio to Swfte
1. List your agents, flows and their credit use
In the Power Platform admin center, Microsoft shows Copilot Credit consumption, including agent flow actions per flow. Sort agents by credits used, note the channels each publishes to, and list the connectors and MCP servers each depends on.
2. Mark the agents that need Microsoft channels
Agents published to Teams or Microsoft Copilot, or grounded in your Microsoft Graph tenant, are usually better left where they are. Agents that mainly call tools and models are the candidates for Swfte Studio.
3. Export for reference
Copilot Studio agents move between environments as solutions. We do not list an import for Copilot Studio solutions, so use the export as a record of instructions, topics, knowledge sources and tools to rebuild. Some items, such as channel settings and sharing, are not solution-aware per Microsoft.
4. Rebuild one agent in Studio
Recreate the instructions, tools and any approval step. Studio’s free plan includes 10 workflows, 5 agents and 2,000 executions per month, enough to test one case. Check each connector you rely on against Studio’s 100+ tool integrations and API.
5. Test on real inputs, then run both
Run 20 to 50 real inputs through Studio’s testing and compare with the Copilot Studio agent. Then run both on live traffic for a while and compare answers, failures and cost.
6. Cut over what fits
Move the agents that do not need Microsoft channels once results hold, and keep Copilot Studio for the rest. Change your credit packs only after consumption drops.

Frequently asked questions about Microsoft Copilot Studio alternatives
Is Swfte a Copilot Studio alternative?
For agents and AI workflows that are not tied to Microsoft 365, yes. For agents that live in Teams and Microsoft Copilot, grounded in your Microsoft Graph tenant, Copilot Studio is the more natural fit. It also has the larger connector catalogue: Microsoft states 1,500+ pre-built data connectors, against 100+ tool integrations in Studio.
How much does Copilot Studio cost?
Microsoft lists tenant-wide packs of 25,000 Copilot Credits at $200.00 per pack per month, and pay-as-you-go at $0.01 per Copilot Credit billed to an Azure subscription. A one-year pre-purchase plan is also offered, which Microsoft says saves up to 20%. What an agent costs depends on its design: a classic answer is 1 credit, a generative answer 2 and an agent action 5 on the standard harness.
Is there a free Copilot Studio plan?
There is a free trial licence. Microsoft says it lets you create agents and test them in the test chat but not publish them, and it can be extended by 30 days. The Copilot Studio user licence for makers is free of charge but needs a prepaid pack subscription first.
Is Copilot Studio the same as GitHub Copilot?
No. Copilot Studio is Microsoft’s studio for building agents and workflows. GitHub Copilot is a separate product, although one of Copilot Studio’s three harnesses, the engines that run the work, is named the GitHub Copilot harness.
Can I import my Copilot Studio agents into Swfte?
No. We do not list an import for Copilot Studio solutions. Microsoft moves agents between its own environments as solutions, which is useful as a record of what to rebuild in Studio.
Can I self-host Copilot Studio?
We did not find a self-hosted edition on the pages we reviewed. Copilot Studio is a Microsoft cloud service, with data location and EU Data Boundary options. Swfte Studio is also a managed service; dedicated or private deployment is scoped as an engagement, not self-serve.
Does Copilot Studio support MCP?
Yes. Microsoft documents connecting agents to MCP servers, with support for MCP tools and resources. Generative orchestration must be turned on, and Microsoft says you are responsible for the tools and resources you access from non-Microsoft servers. For Swfte’s approach see our MCP gateway guide.
Which is better for compliance?
Microsoft lists HIPAA coverage under its Business Associate Agreement, HITRUST CSF, SOC, several ISO standards and CSA STAR for Copilot Studio, with audit reports on the Service Trust Portal. Swfte does not hold a SOC 2 report or an ISO 27001 certificate and does not sign HIPAA BAAs today; a SOC 2 Type I audit is in preparation, and the trust page has the current status. Ask each vendor for its documents and confirm scope for your use case.
