Is ChatGPT agentic AI?

Last reviewed 7 October 2026

The short answer
Parts of it are. OpenAI's help centre, read on 7 October 2026, calls Work an agent for longer, multi-step tasks, and describes workspace agents and agent mode that use connected apps, tools and a browser. A plain ChatGPT answer to a question, with no tools used, is not agentic in that sense.

What OpenAI itself means by an agent

OpenAI's developer guide to agents says agents can plan and complete tasks using tools, work with other agents, and keep context across steps. That is the test applied below. A feature counts as agentic when it plans its own sequence of steps and calls tools to carry them out, rather than producing one reply.

ChatGPT Work: OpenAI's agent for multi-step tasks

OpenAI's help article on Work and Codex describes Work as an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables. It is available on eligible paid plans, which the article lists as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Work can produce documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports, use connected apps such as Gmail, Slack and GitHub, and run scheduled or event-triggered tasks.

When an action needs your approval on the web or mobile app, Work shows on-screen controls to approve or decline it. Codex stays the separate product for software development.

Workspace agents: saved agents for repeatable work

On Business and Enterprise workspaces, you can build a workspace agent that keeps its instructions, apps and tools, runs on a schedule, answers in Slack or starts from an API call. OpenAI says write actions default to Always ask during a run. That fits the test: the agent plans and acts, and a person can still approve each change.

Agent mode and the safeguards OpenAI describes

The ChatGPT agent article, as served on 7 October 2026, describes agent mode, chosen from the tools menu or by typing /agent. It drives a virtual browser by taking screenshots, clicks and fills in forms, and can use apps. OpenAI lists confirmations before high-impact actions, a watch mode that needs supervision on some sites, and a takeover mode for logins.

The same article says the Compliance API records conversations that include agent tasks but not individual agent actions. OpenAI now also points to Work for longer tasks, and we could not verify whether agent mode still appears on every plan, so check your own tools menu.

Where ChatGPT is not acting as an agent

Asking ChatGPT a question and getting an answer is one model response, not an agent run. A custom GPT is closer to a configured assistant: saved instructions, knowledge files and optional actions that run when you chat with it. It calls an API when the conversation needs it, but it does not plan a long run of its own.

Where Swfte stands

Keeping a named approver in the loop outside ChatGPT

Built in the product

ChatGPT’s agents run inside OpenAI’s product and its plan rules. Swfte has no affiliation with OpenAI.

When an agent touches money, customers or regulated records, Swfte Studio lets you build the agent as a workflow that calls OpenAI models, or another provider’s, through Connect. It pauses at an approval step for a named person before the action runs, and each run is traced with logs per step.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT an AI agent or a chatbot?
Both, depending on the feature. A normal chat reply is a chatbot answer. Work, workspace agents and agent mode plan steps and use tools, which OpenAI describes as agent behaviour. The plan you are on decides which of these you can open.
Can ChatGPT take actions without my approval?
OpenAI describes approval prompts in each agent feature: Work shows controls to approve or decline actions, workspace agents default write actions to Always ask, and agent mode asks for confirmation before high-impact actions. A workspace agent builder can change the default to Never ask, so check the setting.
What happened to ChatGPT Operator?
OpenAI's ChatGPT agent article, as read on 7 October 2026, says Operator's functionality is now part of ChatGPT agent mode and that the Operator website is no longer accessible. Longer, multi-step tasks are now described under Work.
Is a custom GPT agentic AI?
Only in a limited way. A GPT keeps instructions, knowledge and optional actions that call an outside API, but it acts when you chat with it rather than planning a long task of its own. New GPTs can only be created on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, according to OpenAI.
